It's back-to-school season, and we are excited to help our students get off to a strong start to the school year. While the discipline and confidence that we teach in every class have been proven to help students to succeed in school, in September we will be adding in a couple of conversations with students to help them succeed.

  1. Pick the right place to get started on school work. Distractions make it harder for the average adult to perform optimally, and for kids, that's doubly so. Finding a space where you can minimize distractions will both make school work easier, and also cut down the time needed to complete the school work. This not only leads to better grades but since homework is easier and less time-consuming, cuts down on arguments at home.
  2. Pick the right time to get started on school work. Some kids do better with a short break like a snack and a few minutes of quiet before jumping back into school work. Other kids do much better with no break at all. Others need a full reset with an hour-long activity so they can come back refreshed and recharged. Helping your child to figure that out, and then setting a plan to follow that approach is incredibly valuable.
  3. Prepare your workspace. For some students, as soon as they sit down to do work, they realize they need to get back up. Learning to prepare and then get to work is a skill that most kids need some help with. Helping them form a routine will cut down on the frustrations that stem from getting up a million times in the middle of homework.

You will hear these discussions during regular kids' martial arts classes during our fall schedule. But I hope you also work them into your conversations at home. Helping your child get in the habit of doing their school work at a good place and time will go a long way to a positive and productive school year!
